Defining the Lost Generation

The time period following World War I was plagued by fear, anger, and disillusionment. This is clearly portrayed by the characters in Ernest Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises. In this book, Hemingway approaches his audience with a flair that utilizes concise sentence structure, a narration which relies mostly on dialogue over scenery, and non-traditional plotline to elaborate on the disillusioned woolly-headed Generation. With these tools, Hemingway is able to capture the raw emotion of the lives of the people in this generation, the generation that set the standard for the next ninety years to come.
